Project: Prune large native & exotic trees.  Remove dead, dangerous & undesirable trees.

“What makes it so special is its incredible collection of mature, rare, exotic trees. I don’t think you’ll find anything else quite like this in Australia.”-- John Patrick, Gardening Australia, 18/07/2009.

Total Tree Care were contracted to undertake extensive pruning work to prepare the many rare and significant trees of Glen Harrow Gardens to prepare them for transformation into a tree-top adventure park.  The site had been left to grow wild for many decades and required weeks of work to make these trees safe for use as a public attraction.

Glen Harrow Gardens  was established by English settler and horticulturalist Mr Thomas Cole in 1879. Mr Thomas ran a experimental tree nursery featuring exotic trees and was among the pioneers of discovering which plant species would flourish in the Australian environment. The estate now boasts some of the oldest and rarest trees of their type in Australia, including a magnificent 150-year-old Algerian Oak, believed to be one of the largest of its species in the world, a rare 130 year old Araucaria Laubenfelsii that is the only one of its type in Victoria, and two "Chinquapin" Japanese Oaks also believed to be the only ones in Victoria.  Also of interest is the fact the site contains the 3 tallest species of trees in the world.  To see in the one place a Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempivirens), Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans) and Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is quite unique.  And for us, a privelidge to work on them all!

Project: Film segment on tree climbing for Network 10.

Network 10 contacted us to film a segment for their kids science show Scope.  Each week the show has a theme and for this episode it was "Things that climb"  We suggested filming back at Glen Harrow Park where we had just recently completed a major project for Trees Adventure.  They agreed it was a great fit for a kids show so off we went!  Half a day of filming all sorts of things we end up with a few minutes of airtime. Not only for kids, this video will give anyone with a curiousity about what arborists do, why we do it and what we are often asked... how on earth do we climb a up a large tree!

Project: Remove dangerous 65m Mountain Ash at private residence in Sherbrooke, Dandenong Ranges.

Total Tree Care were contracted to remove the remains of a large Eucalyptus regnans after a large stem failed during storms, leaving the remaining structure unsafe.  The dismantling and removal of such a large tree amongst established gardens required expert rigging with our mobile tree-mounted winch system until the tree was down low enough that a crane could reach to take over the heavy lifting duties.  An articulated loader and ground mats were used to protect the manicured lawn from damage.  In all approximately 150m3 of woodchip and 130m3 of logwood was taken out of this site from the one tree!
